Insurance
Insurance should be the dull, dependable part of your plan. Get the right cover for the right reasons, and keep investment out of it.
Term life cover
Pure protection for people who depend on your income. It pays your family a fixed amount if you die within the term, and costs far less than any savings-linked policy.
Health insurance
Protects your savings from hospital bills. Two policies with the same premium can pay very differently, depending on room rent caps, co-pay and waiting periods.
Cover at a glance
| Cover | Who needs it | How much | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Term life | Anyone with dependants or a loan | Work from needs; ten to fifteen times income as a start | Term to age 60 to 65; honest disclosure; claim record |
| Health | Everyone, including parents | Enough for treatment in your city; add a super top-up for more | Room rent cap, co-pay, waiting periods, network hospitals |
| Personal accident | People whose income would stop after disability | A multiple of income | Disability benefits, not just death benefit |
| Home | Owners with a loan or valuable contents | Cost to rebuild, plus contents | What is excluded, and how claims are valued |
| Motor | Every vehicle owner (third-party is mandatory) | Insured declared value | Add-ons you'd actually use; claim process |
General guidance, not a recommendation of any product. Compare the policy wording and the insurer's claim record yourself, or with a licensed adviser.

Term insurance: how much cover, which plan, and what voids a claim
A term plan is the cheapest way to protect people who depend on your income. Getting the amount and the paperwork right matters more than the brand.
Endowment, money-back and many unit-linked plans bundle the two, and usually do both poorly: small cover, high costs, long lock-ins. Buy a term plan for protection and invest the difference separately. If you already hold one, don't surrender it in a hurry. Check the surrender value and the penalties first.
Habits that protect claims
- Declare everything honestlyMost rejections trace back to something left off the form.
- Tell your familyShare the policy numbers and where the documents are kept.
- Keep nominees currentUpdate after marriage, a birth or a death.
- Never let it lapseUse auto-pay, and note the renewal date.
